All evaluation questions

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

• Every time you get a new cut whilst they are singing you hear drum beats and at the end quick singing. This means that every time you hear that sound you expect there to be a new cut.
• Through out the video it cuts between performance and narrative. The band consists of a drummer, singer and a bass player. This is conventional of the genre although sometimes they have an electric guitar and a bass.
• In the case of mise en scene the singer is wearing a black t-shirt which goes in contrast to the colourful background behind which is always colourful. During the narration more colourful costume is worn e.g. the girl is wearing a red scarf. This both develops and challenges the convention of a pop video where you would expect to see colourful vibrant colours. I did this because I wanted to have colourful backgrounds and I wanted the costume to contrast the background.
• The use of bright colour continues into my advert and digipak. Which follows the convention of music video because you expect the advert, digipak and music video to look similar so that you can make the connection that it is that band.

2. How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
• The band name that I chose is Teen Stars and in the video some of the backgrounds consist of stars with blue behind it. Also on my digipak there are stars, which links back to the name of the band.
• For both my advert and my digipak they use dark blue and greyish blue split across so that it is divided diagonally. This is so that there is a link between the advert and the digipak.
• The link between the video and advert is made by me taking screen grabs of my video and putting them on my advert. I did this because it is conventional of an album advert to see parts of the video or something that links with the video.
• Another link is that the font used in my digipak and advert is the same this is so that the audience can tell that they go together and that if they saw the advert then were looking for the album they would be able to spot it quicker because they would just have to look for the font and colours.
• Lastly both my digipak and advert have a picture of me on them and then I am included in the music video so this could make the audience think that I could be a member of Teen Stars.
• I think that the combination between my music video and the ancillary texts is fairly effective. It could be improved by having a few more things on my advert. However the reason that it has so little on it is because I think that I simple advert can be just as effective in targeting an audience as a poster covered in pictures. Also when I did my research on the band that sings the song, their posters are also simple with the band title, album title and date in come out. So I decided that it would be more realistic if I did a similar thing.
3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • I posted my video onto youtube.
  • I then asked people to comment on what they thought about my video.
  • I got comments back such as "brilliant' and "okay", however when I asked people to give constructive criticism they ignored me and continued making the same comments.
  • My dad however told me that if i wanted to make it better i needed to make it clear what the narration is.
  • I also learnt from my teacher that i needed to use a larger variety of shots.
  • If I were to do it again then I spend more time planning and I would push my actors more to turn up. I would also plan better so that I don't end up doing the work at the last minute.
4. How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

• I used media technologies in the construction process by using final cut to make the video, which is an improvement on last year where I used imovie. This means that I could edit my video in ways that I couldn’t using imovie, however I found it harder because every time I did something I had to render which would take over the majority of the time. Also I kept moving the clips too far so that I had to move it back again, this meant for one clip I could take ten minutes getting the lip sync right. The thing that took up most of the time was that you had to remember to lock the layers other wise when you moved or cut clips everything went out of sync. This meant I had to find the clip again and start over.
• I also used Photoshop to create the backgrounds in my video. I then used it to create my digipak and my advert. This was because I could have different layers and edit one layer without editing the whole thing. This is an improvement on last year where I used the font part of imovie to get my text to play over the top of the video.
• During the planning stage I used Prezi and Slideshare to upload word documents and videos. This meant that I had a different way of representing my research. To get my videos I used Youtube.
• I took some inspiration from the original smash mouth music video. E.g. costume.
• Originally I was going to use some similar camera shots as well but due to who was available to help me I had to invent my own types of shots to use that went with the narration.
• When I was doing my research I made a questionnaire asking people which genre of music they prefer, why and what conventions they expect to see in that genre.
• For my evaluation I used video by asking people what they thought of my video and filming their responses. I also used Facebook by posting the video to my profile and asking people to watch it and then
